Well, I'm back at class this year. They really didn't have any of the classes that I wanted to take at a good time that I could fit in around my work schedule. So, I'm taking life drawing again to keep my chops up. Here's a page of 1 minute gestures from the last class in soft charcoal.

And here is my final project painting from oil painting class. The assignment was to paint a self portrait using a mirror not a photo. I went for extreme close up in monochrome. It has about 7 to 10 layers now. I think it still could use work but this is how I turned it in.

Oil Painting class is coming to a close

Well here's the initial line work for the final project in Oil Painting class for the semester. The assignment is a self portrait. I've done enough self portraits for different art classes at this point that this was not very interesting to me. So, with all that I think I'm going to go for an extreme close up kinda thing. I'm also thinking of doing it with one color...maybe blue or purple. Dunno.

Here's a 30 min sketch in charcoal from last night. Overall is was fun. I'm finally starting to get the hang of faces and heads. The semester is almost over and I am going to miss the easy access to drawing live models over the summer.

OK, Here's my effort from yesterday. I was able to put about 5 hrs in on this. I mostly worked on the table and cahmpagne bucket. I did another layer of linework and hair too. I'm liking this one so far. It's been very fun.

New Brushes!

Well I got several new brushes last week. I got 4 at my favorite art store in Little Italy in San Diego and I won 2 auctions on ebay for a lot of 10 assorted mongoose hair brushes. I used them today and damn they make a huge difference. I have enough good brushes now to get me by for a while. Cheap brushes suck. I was so happy I finally bought some quality ones.

......and here is the begining of laying down some color. So far so good, I like this one more than any others that I've done. I'm starting to get the hang of the color mixing too.

This was from oil painting class a couple weeks ago. The teacher did a pretty interesting thing. He took a slide projector and forced it out of focus severly and had us all paint very quickly the blurred images. Basically just splashing color down. Then every 20 miin or so he'd sharpen the image a little until it was in focus. We did 2 paintings that day. It was very fun and pretty interesting to do. The idea being that it forced us to just look at shapes and colors and not get hung up on the little details.

Here's the final painting. I didn't really finish the whole thing, it could use soem more layering but I'm pretty burnt out on it now. We had a critique and everything. I'm glad its done for class, I learned that I get bored with still life scenes.

Welllllll, this last class was pretty good. The teacher did a demo of starting the color layer. I didn't get to the color layer. I wanted to go lighter on the background to get a better contrast between the teapot, oranges and the background. I brought it home so I can work on it more, maybe get to trying the color mixing.

OK here's from last weeks class (2nd class). This is the next layer of painting that was done in Van Dyke Brown and white. The whole idea is to layer in the different values of the composition. I was also using Liquin paint medium mixed in.

Here's the underpainting done in burnt umber and Gamsol mineral spirits. The mineral spirits were used to make the paint more translucent and lighter.

OK, I'm back from the winter break and this semester it's oil painting. When I started going to art school like 2 years ago the whole idea was that I wanted to try oil painting. I started with learning to draw and now....finally...I'm taking oil painting. This is from the first class. We had to do a sketch on the 18 x 24" canvas from a still life that the teacher set up.

Here was my final drawing for the end of the semester. It was a 2 class assignment from last week. So, it was a total of about 4 hours or so. The first session was mostly doing light line work and erasing to get the perspective and foreshortening correct because I was having a complete off night. Then the second session was getting the shading and light into it. Charcoal on Canson Mi Tientes paper.
